Myde burst into his office and ruffled through his Rolodex plucking Collance’s number out. Snapping up the phone, he dialled the number and held the receiver to his ear. There was a sharp click. “This is Nick Collance. I’m not available at the moment, please leave your name and number and I will call you back.” A beep cued Myde to speak. He paused for a moment, and then hung up the phone.

He sat back in his chair tapping two fingers on his chin. There he sat thinking for a moment. Maybe he should wait and see where this led before he told Collance. He reached inside his pocket and pulled out the photo Simon gave him. It was only a small passport photo. The corners were worn off, and there was a crease through the middle where it’d obviously been bent.

He looked down at it again. It was a black and white picture of a man. Myde stared at the image as if he had to verify it for himself. He leant forward and fished through his drawer and pulled out the case file. Flattening it out, he turned to the autopsy photo of the victim. It was definitely the same man.

How did Simon have this picture? Did he really have something to do with the murder? Was Jacob the killer? Did he leave Simon here once he had killed? If so, there was a good chance he wasn’t returning. Simon had fallen into some serious trouble. Myde’s heart felt for Simon even more, the only protector he’d ever known had abandoned him.

Myde was convinced he had to find Jacob to protect Simon. He wondered if Collance had found any information on him, or if he’d even bothered to look. He glanced back at the phone impatiently. Where was Collance? His frustration made the matter more urgent in his mind.

He had to find out for himself what’d happened between this man and Jacob, what Simon knew, and if he had been dragged into the murder through his own ignorance. He had to know what happened, and at this point Simon was the only one who knew.

The cold winds blasted through the narrow streets of the city. With his collar up on his jacket, Collance stood outside the bank waiting for it to open at 9:00am.

He felt the chill stabbing through the layers of clothes he’d piled on before he left his apartment. He looked at his watch again. It was now exactly 9:00am. A moment later the guard approached from the inside and unlocked the doors. A flood of warm air hit Collance as he rushed inside, and he sighed with relief.

Without hesitation, he walked in and shook the rain off his jacket. He had a safety deposit box containing records of all the major cases he had worked on, copies of reports and notes he’d taken on cases that had never been handed in. It was a detailed record of his career. It was also the best way of finding out who he knew around the assault case involving Baumann four years ago.
